Every year is filled with ups and downs, and sometimes there are more downs than ups. If 2015 felt like it went from bad to worse, here are 5 ways that you can empower yourself and make 2016 your year.
Put yourself first.
This may be the hardest, but it is also the most important. Sometimes being the nicest, most accommodating person means you are doing things that aren’t in your best interests. Sometimes you have to choose to disappoint other people in order to make yourself happy. So if you are starting a career, doing a degree or basically heading down any path solely because you think doing so will make others proud or impressed by you – stop now! Because in the end you’re the one living this life and your happiness is what matters most.
Stop letting other people define you.
Take your opinion of yourself seriously. What other people think doesn’t matter. Get off social media and find what makes you tick. Stop trying to construct yourself into this perfect person and stop thinking that everyone else is living a perfect life. It’s not true, it’s not real. What is real is that we are all imperfect, we all make mistakes and we all say and do dumb things. But we are all unique and that is what makes us special. What makes you unique? Embrace it, live it, own it.
Be spontaneous and adventurous.
Move across the country. Book a flight to an international destination. Change careers. Stop limiting yourself to what you think you should be doing, and go and do what you want to be doing. Take risks. If it scares you – all the more reason to do it. Life is not meant to be a prison of monotony. Break the walls down. Embrace fun and light-heartedness. Embrace silliness and doing things without a reason. Just do and just be.
Find a job you love.
As an adult, we spend more of our time at work than at home (unless you are rich enough to retire in your twenties…in which case, I hate you). Considering how much time is spent at work, why would you want to spend it doing something that makes you feel miserable, tired, uninspired, bored or all of the above. Life is precious, time is limited and opportunities are countless – so make the effort and find a job that you jump out of bed to get to, a job where you feel like a BOSS…even if you’re not.
Take a trip.
There is no better way than to improve your life than to take a trip somewhere. You’ll come home and see everything right with where you are in life, or everything wrong. Either way, it’ll be a wake-up call to either appreciate your current situation or a kick up the butt to start changing things. Plus, you know, travel is never a bad thing!
